What is Clinical Hypnotherapy & NLP?

Clinical Hypnotherapy and NLP in Sydney is the application of altered states of consciousness, or trance, for a therapeutic endpoint. Relaxation and deep focus is something we’ve all experienced before so in knowing this, it becomes a state of knowing that hypnotic trance is a natural state of being.

People are not treated by hypnosis but rather treated in hypnosis. Every day, we all shift into hypnotic states of trance. And in trance, our perceptions of time seem to distort appearing shorter or longer.

How Hypnotic Trance works

When we read a book, watch a movie or daydream, we become focused and in this state of focus, we become absorbed into a state, feeling, or memory within the paradigm of the unconscious mind. In this state, we can access our unconscious mind and re-program it for our well-being.

Think of the unconscious as a software program on a computer. A computer technician can make changes to the software just like a Hypnotherapy practitioner can reframe the language of the unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is always very safe and isn’t as hocus-pocus as we have been led to believe. It is the process of relaxing the mind through the brain’s ‘Theta State’, where the unconscious mind can be accessed.

Neuroscientists have backed up Hypnotherapy and Meditation as an effective way to alter the brain’s neuron activity, to bring on relaxation, and to strengthen memory, clarity, and confidence. This process also re-wires the neuro connections associated with patterns, habits, negative thoughts, and states.

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy & NLP?

Hypnotherapy in Sydney is the process of inducing a state of relaxation, where an individual comfortably allows themselves to enter a deep state of subconscious awareness. Positive suggestions are given directly to the part of the mind known as the subconscious. Under Hypnosis, the conscious rational, analytical, and judgemental part of the mind is temporarily bypassed and asked to step aside.

The conscious analytical mind then observes allowing the subconscious part, which influences mental and physical functions to take the lead making this part receptive to change. During the trance state, there is focused concentration on the specific purpose of increasing the potential for change, changing limiting beliefs and behaviours, and gaining insight and wisdom. Within the unconscious mind, there are creative resources and wisdom that can be accessed for changing inner perceptions. Often, creativity and resourceful choices are given to the unconscious, allowing this part of your mind to make the desired change.

Although Hypnotherapy can be light, medium, or deep, a medium trance is usually very effective. Deep breathing is used to slow down the heart rate, where the brain produces Alpha and Theta waves. Normal states of consciousness i.e. sleeping, dreaming, being awake, can be detected in the wave patterns produced by the brain. The state of hypnosis differs from all three. The brain waves associated with quiet, receptive states are called Alpha and Theta waves. Just like in Delta sleep, the Theta wave states promote gradual relaxation and healing at the cellular and DNA level within the cellular structures in the body.

misconceptions of hypnosis

What Hypnosis isn’t

There is a misconception of what happens in a hypnotic trance. In a Hypnotic trance, we are always very aware of our surroundings. We can always hear the practitioner speak so the suggestions are integrated into the unconscious paradigm. Being unconscious means we are virtually asleep and in deep delta sleep, and therefore we would not be able to take in the new information into the unconscious mind. So yes, we need to be balancing halfway between being asleep and being consciously awake.

We need to be in a space where we can see the window into the deep unconscious. From the point of being very aware, we would see and experience the opposite direction, we would be looking into the window of our deeper inner unconscious mind. We need to be in this halfway space because we need to experience and integrate both conscious mind and unconscious mind respectively.

the brain

How Hypnotherapy and NLP affects the mind

Self-hypnosis can easily be achieved under the guidance of a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. In no time, you will be able to achieve it on your own. Meditation and Self-hypnosis are very much the same thing. Daily Meditation or Self-hypnosis can change the way you connect with your inner world and the world around you. Hypnosis can be beneficial for relaxation; and the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of the mind. Research shows that when people are in a hypnotic state, it alters the way the brain processes information. It gives us access to the powerful and personal resources that all of us have in our subconscious mind.

When we access this Theta brain wave in a relaxed state, our mind shifts from the overly used limbic (emotional brain) and Cerebellum (flight and flight reaction) brain and shifts the brain into the Cerebrum brain, which is associated with the higher human mind, higher thinking, and problem-solving.

Using the higher mind

We often want to solve issues and make changes with the wrong parts of our brains. When we experience habitual patterns and emotional imbalances, we use parts of our brain that cannot overcome these patterns of behaviour. When we relax, our higher human brain known as the Neocortex or Cerebrum brain is utilised. Clarity, problem-solving and deeper processing can take place for change. As a result, the neurotransmitters in the brain rewire; and new states, behaviours, and patterns are created. Through repetitive anchoring of new states, we then replace old neural connections with new connections, therefore creating new behaviours.

The mechanical subconscious mind

The subconscious stores habitual patterns that are considered the mechanical aspect of our mind. In hypnosis, we have the power to replace old habits with new desirable ones that can assist us in achieving the things we couldn’t before therapy. The subconscious doesn’t know the difference between a bad habit and a good habit. All it knows is that it needs to honour protecting and pleasuring you. So, we must go deep within the subconscious mind and give it new resources to work with.

In my sessions, I use a range of Clinical processes, all of which work with the power of the subconscious mind as well as shifting emotional blockages in the mind and body. This is a great way to unlock the wonders of our deep inner wisdom within the subconscious and apply it consciously in our everyday lives.

The magic of the present moment

Focusing the client on the present state of wisdom, the unconscious mind finds new ways to feel. What comes up for the client is dissolved or transmuted into something in line with their inner voice. When this happens, the practitioner will anchor or re-establish this new energy, beliefs, and insights back into the body for the client. Finally, new beliefs and feelings integrate into the present now, physiologically as well as psychologically.

The client retains the wisdom, knowledge, and experience from these past experiences without being affected by them. The client is re-oriented into the future so he or she can experience his or her goals and manifest them in the present moment.

THE BRAIN STATE

‘Theta Relaxation’ therapy for cellular healing

In Hypnotherapy and NLP therapy, the client gently rests for a minute and observes his or her feelings and how these feelings came about. We sometimes hold blockages that have been created from past experiences, and beliefs that are no longer beneficial. We can hold these beliefs within our cells and DNA, deep within our genetics from our ancestors, parents, society, childhood, and trauma.

Mainstream science is now discovering that our cells are aware just as we are and can be worked with for well-being. The practitioner works with the feeling part of the client’s mind, exposing patterns of meta-limiting belief systems and patterns across the client’s whole lifetime. The client realises that the feelings and beliefs are no longer necessary anymore.

If there are no benefits that the issues provide, the client then feels safe to let the issues go. The client is then encouraged to find ways to release them, with the encouragement of positive suggestions. The client’s beliefs are re-framed with new perspectives and insight within the Theta state, allowing the client to change the way he or she feels.

The belief systems of the unconscious mind

The unconscious mind is the part of us that controls most of our behaviours. It’s a very protective part of our mind that is 90% of our hidden awareness. The unconscious mind is the part of us that makes sure we breathe when we sleep and warn us of danger.

It’s the part of us that holds our deepest beliefs created from conditioning and programming that shapes the map of our inner world. Beliefs can be limiting and empowering at the same time. Through therapy, we will look at those beliefs created within your unconscious mind as we reframe these beliefs using gentle positive suggestions and NLP exercises.

The intention of self-care and inner kindness

We are often harsh on ourselves. Once we begin to be kinder to ourselves and others, we can then start the healing process. One thing that is very important to understand is that you must have a clear intention for this therapy to be effective. Knowing what you are seeking, trusting the process for change, and having the courage to pass through the healing process is the key to making change. The most important thing to remember is to be creative. Imagination is the tool to manifest what you want by creating it in your mind first.

The mind is the ‘casual’ of all manifested reality and where we seed our physical reality. This is where our body’s functions, illnesses, and limitations stem from. What the mind thinks about, the body then follows its lead. So, what are you mostly thinking about? We are what we think and feel. Hypnosis is about changing our thinking patterns, the critical voice in our head and distorted perceptions we create. When changing our inner thoughts, the mind, body, and spirit will be working together in harmony.

NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING

Suggestion and Timeline Therapy

Suggestion Hypnotherapy is used to create change, where suggestions, metaphors, and visualisations are used to encourage the positive feelings associated with change. The client is encouraged to use all their senses to experience shifts of awareness. Some people may be more visual, so the practitioner may use language that is more visually oriented.

Guiding the client from the past tense to the present now allows a positive shift for future change. A suggestion is a psychological process by which one person influences the thoughts, feelings, or behaviour of another with mutual consent and respect. Most people use more than one representational system of our five senses.

The five senses used through the implementation of suggestion therapy:

Visualisation (Eyes)
Auditory (Hearing)
Smell (Scent)
Taste (Taste)
Touch (Feeling and Physical Sensation associated with space as ‘Kinaesthetic’)

Some people are ‘Synaesthetic‘, which means they use all five senses. The majority of these people use at least Visual, Auditory, and Kinaesthetic, commonly known as ‘VAK‘. The more senses you use, the more powerful the change can take place within the unconscious mind. Metaphoric storytelling is powerfully used to reframe the unconscious framework of the deeper mind. Which can activate all the senses and make the experience as powerful as possible for the client to make the change.

Understanding NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States in the 1970s. Its creators claim a connection between the neurological processes (‘Neuro’), language (‘linguistic’), and behavioural patterns learned through experience (‘programming’) and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is also something that I utilise in the sessions, and these techniques are effective for clients to use to support and strengthen themselves through their process of change. Linguistics refers to language; programming refers to how that neural language functions. In other words, learning NLP is like learning the language of your mind.
